What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain-text file at your site root that tells AI systems what your site is about: an H1 with your brand name, a blockquote summary, and sections of links to your key pages. It is cheap to publish and helps agents describe you accurately, though major AI crawlers do not yet treat it as a ranking signal.
Common questions
- What is llms.txt?
- llms.txt is a plain-text file at your site root that gives AI systems a short, structured summary of your site: a title, a one-line description, and links to your most important pages. It follows the llmstxt.org format — an H1 name, a blockquote summary, then sections of markdown links.
- Do AI crawlers actually read llms.txt?
- Not much, and it is honest to say so. Through 2026 the major crawlers from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic have not committed to using it in production, and none treats it as a ranking signal. It is cheap to publish and gives agents a clean description of you, but it is not a substitute for crawlable, well-structured pages.
- Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
- No. robots.txt controls which crawlers may access your site and is universally obeyed. llms.txt describes what your site is about for AI systems that choose to read it. robots.txt is enforcement; llms.txt is context.
- What should go in my llms.txt?
- Your brand name as the H1, a single quotable sentence describing what you do and who it is for, and grouped links to the pages you want an assistant to read first — typically product, pricing, docs and contact. Keep it short; move long-form content to llms-full.txt if you need it.
- Where do I put the file?
- At your site root, served as plain text: yourdomain.com/llms.txt. If you use a framework with a public or static directory, drop the file there and redeploy.
