The short version
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of improving how often — and how favorably — your brand appears inside the answers that AI assistants give. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity "what's the best tool for X?", AEO is what decides whether your name is in the answer or missing from it.
If SEO was about ranking on a page of ten blue links, AEO is about being one of the three names an AI names out loud.
Why AEO matters now
Search behavior is shifting fast. Instead of typing a keyword and scanning results, people increasingly ask an assistant a full question and take the synthesized answer at face value. That changes the game in three ways:
- There is no page two. An AI answer names a handful of options and stops. If you're not in that shortlist, you're invisible — there's no "scroll down" to save you.
- Recommendations feel like advice, not ads. When an assistant recommends a brand, users trust it more than a paid result. Being recommended is worth more than being ranked.
- Your existing tools can't see it. Traditional SEO platforms measure Google rankings. They cannot tell you what an AI assistant says about you, who it recommends instead, or why.
What AEO actually involves
AEO isn't one trick — it's a loop of measuring and improving several signals:
- Mention rate — how often AI names your brand for the questions your buyers ask.
- Answer position — whether you're named first or buried at the bottom.
- Share of voice — which competitors get recommended instead of you.
- Citations — the sources an AI trusts and links to when it answers.
- Accuracy — whether the AI states correct facts about your brand (hallucinations are common).
Improving these usually means earning citations on the sources AI trusts (review sites, communities, authoritative articles), making your own site machine-readable, and correcting the record where AI gets you wrong.
How AEO differs from SEO
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Google's blue links | AI-generated answers |
| Goal | Rank on the page | Be named in the answer |
| Winner | Top of a long list | One of ~3 recommendations |
| Signal | Backlinks, keywords | Citations, mentions, accuracy |
They're complementary — strong SEO often helps AEO — but they are measured and won differently.
Where to start
You can't improve what you can't see. The first step is simply to audit what AI says about you today: run your real buyer questions across the major engines and look at whether you're mentioned, where you rank, who beats you, and what's cited.
That baseline is exactly what LLMVerse is built to give you — a visibility score across six AI engines plus a prioritized list of what to fix. You can run a free audit in about two minutes.
